Did you all enjoy your pancakes on Shrove Tuesday? Do you know why they are eaten on that day? Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the start of Lent when Christians remember Jesus’ time of fasting in the wilderness before he started his ministry. In the past, Lent was a time of great self-denial and it was forbidden to eat eggs and dairy products – so pancakes were a great way of using them up! Now, many people give up a favourite food (although using Lent as a way to lose weight is not the general idea!) – others take on something – for example, extra voluntary service.
On the middle Sunday of Lent, traditionally there was an easing of the strict restrictions - it was sometimes known as Refreshment Sunday – but now it is more commonly known as Mothering Sunday. Come and join our special service on that day and collect a posy of flowers for your mother or someone else who would appreciate them.
During Lent, we shall still be having a happy and enjoyable time at Seekers. We shall be holding our usual meetings on 7th and 21st March during the 10.15 service but there will also be lots for children in the other Sunday services this month – 14th March is Mothering Sunday with a special family service and, on 28th March, join us as we meet the donkey and process around the Church grounds.
On 2nd April, Good Friday, there will be activities for children (aimed at years 3 to 6) including the construction of the Easter Garden. The event will be held in the Church from 12 noon until 3pm and will end with a short act of worship. Bring a packed lunch! For more details, see the pull-out Easter section in the centre of this month’s Clock.
YOUTH GROUP
On term time Sunday evenings (7.15 – 8.45), Melanie kindly throws open her living room and DVD collection for a group of young people to have time to chat among themselves (without adult company) and to eat cake, chocolate, popcorn etc. (Current members are aged from 11 to 13).
If you would like to join them, contact the Rectory for details.
